Donna,

I couldn't have said it better myself. I tried, but I just couldn't seem to put it into words. Education is changing rapidly, and unfortunately it seems that "the powers that be" in the upper levels of education, government, and business may not see eye-to-eye on this, and it could get quite interesting...or overwhelming...only time will tell.

At least now we can stand on our boards and ride the wave, I don't think we'll all be doing very many tricks too soon...

Tom,
At the beginning of this course, I probably would have had a different response. I have since changed my views on some areas. I think we do need more availability to the tools of the Internet, but it needs some safety protection built in I think. We can't just open the proverbial 'barn door' and hope for the best. Education of all parties and practice are very important. It needs to be done safely. A lot to think about.

I concur with the careful planning. But it seems to me that it is time for some type of gradual change in the tools available to us on the internet.

It is daunting, but I think it's important that you do this for yourself first. Find the joy that can come from learning within these connections and then pass that on to your students, no matter what it is they are passionate about. Have fun!

Donna,
I love your site. I'm trying to make up an earlier lesson by posting a comment on social networking. I think you hit the nail on the head by listing the golden rule of not saying anything about someone else you wouldn't want someone to say about you. If we are instilling this in our students as they go up through the grades, we're halfway there in creating successful (and responsible) users of things such as myspace and facebook, and whatever comes along.

Donna,

The importance of modeling ethical, responsible use really isn't a gray area for your grade level. As kids mature, and are able to weigh their choices and exert more reasoning skills to validate their decisions in some gray areas, then that's different.
So, I agree that you have to consider what tools you're using carefully and how you model their use with kids in fifth grade. They need to learn the right messages before they learn mixed messages.

Debbie,
It is a really fine line to walk on some of these issues. We want to encourage good and safe use of the Internet and at the same time keep a handle on district usage. I think that we have a good start here, but need to work together to provide a consistent path for others to be able to feel comfortable starting to use this new world. I did enjoy the Davidson article and thank you for the links at delicious!

I agree with what you have to say here. Because this is a new world, a 21st century world we need to partake in it but need to show our students, when the opportunity arises that there are right and wrong ways to use the resources we have in a school setting.
At your grade level I can understand using another something more secure where we could post student work. I see you read the Hall Davidson article, didn't he have some good suggestions? I also looked at other articles he wrote in tech learning concerning fair use and copyright. I posted them to my delicious account if you want to see them.

I guess I was misinformed, I was under the impression the board wanted them blocked. Either way, I think it needs to be a step by step process and it would have to start with educating teachers more than anything before they are put in the middle of it. I'm pretty much up for most challenges, but I think this one would need some careful planning so it doesn't become over used and defeat the purpose.

I think it could be a little easier than you describe. We have a new administration all around, who have come from different places, they may help us in this endeavour. It is not a board policy, it is something the administrators chose to make students safe. I do think it would be wise to go step by step in the education process and including the board in part of that is a good idea so parents and the community understand. I have found them very supportive when they are in the know.
